First responders face some of the most challenging and traumatic situations in our communities. For the firefighters of Roseville, California, this often includes repeated exposure to opioid-related emergencies — a reality that can take a cumulative toll on mental health and resilience.
To address this, the Roseville Fire Department has launched a proactive mental health support program for its firefighters and staff, funded through the city’s allocation of national opioid settlement dollars. The initiative ensures personnel have timely access to confidential peer support, evidence-based resources, and wellness tools before challenges escalate into crises.
Introducing PeerConnect
At the heart of the program is PeerConnect, a mobile-first peer support and wellness platform developed by First Response Mental Health (FRMH). The platform combines secure technology with trained peer supporters to provide:
-
Proactive wellness check-ins after high-stress or opioid-related incidents
-
Quick access to peer support and vetted resources
-
Confidential self-assessments and psychoeducational content
-
De-identified aggregate reporting for leadership to track trends and improve support programs
All reporting is strictly de-identified, ensuring firefighters’ privacy is fully protected. No personal health information is shared with leadership.
Why this program matters
“Taking care of our people is a core part of taking care of our community,” says Fire Chief Ryan Harrigan. “This project ensures our members don’t have to walk alone after tough calls.”
Roseville’s initiative is a strong example of how opioid settlement funds can be reinvested to support those who are often on the front lines of the crisis. By providing proactive mental health support, the department is helping firefighters stay resilient, connected, and ready to serve their community.
Nik Fiorito from FRMH adds, “By pairing peer support with secure, mobile technology, Roseville Fire is making it easier for firefighters to ask for and receive support early and often — before challenges become critical.”
